The Football League Paper - - NEWS -

AS THE old saying goes, a good big ‘un always beats a good little ‘un. So it proved as Reading were dismembered at Old Trafford last weekend. Upsets are wonderful but, fact is, when world-class players turn up and strut their stuff, there’s not much that a Championship side can do about it. Nevertheless, Royals boss Jaap Stam, pictured right, was justified in defending his refusal to play safe. When you get it right, as Plymouth did at Anfield, putting ten men behind the ball makes a manager look like Hannibal at Cannae. But, nine times out of ten, it simply delays the inevitable. As a supporter, I’d much rather go home knowing my team had been thrashed trying to win than lost narrowly without throwing a punch.
