The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Charlie Bennett

JOE Edwards knows serious questions have been asked of Walsall this season, but the midfielder insists the Saddlers have the momentum which makes them dark horses in the promotion race.

Jon Whitney’s men struggled at the beginning of the campaign, but a thumping 4-1 victory over Sheffield United in midJanuary helped turn their form around and they are now within sight of a playoff place.

Walsall’s form at the Banks’s Stadium has been impressive, with five successive home wins before yesterday’s clash with Oldham, and Edwards has lofty ambitions.

“There was a lot of talk at the start of the season about how good a team we could be,” the 26-year-old said.

“But it was about putting in a performance so people could believe it. We, as players, always knew what we were capable of.

“But it’s one thing saying it – you have got to do it. It took a bit longer than we hoped, but after Rochdale (a 2-0 home defeat on January 2) we beat Sheffield United and that has been the catalyst.

“We showed then we could beat top of the league and we showed people what we can do. Now we need to keep going because we want to be fighting for something at the end of the season.”
