The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Luke Baker

BLACKBURN goalkeeper David Raya has set his sights on pushing current No.1 Jason Steele after signing a contract extension at Ewood Park.

Raya joined Rovers from Spanish club Cornella in 2012 and signed his first professional contract in February 2014.

The 21-year-old Spaniard has made ten Blackburn appearances since then – including six this season before the weekend – but has been unable to dislodge Steele, 26, for a regular starting berth.

Yet Raya, who was on loan at National League Southport a couple of seasons ago, is putting in the hard yards to try to force an opportunity for himself.

“Me and Jason work hard every day and we’re pushing each other,” said Raya. “I’m trying to push him and trying to get his spot.

“I always try to work as hard as possible and doing that makes Steeley work even harder not to lose his place, I think.

“He’s been playing well ever since he came. He’s a really good goalkeeper and I’ve learnt a lot from him. It’s good to have that competition between us.

“I’m just waiting for my chance to show the new manager (Tony Mowbray) what I can do and then we’ll see if I can stay in the team.”
