The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP - By Luke Baker

CHRIS Maxwell has already achieved his first goal since joining Preston by making the No.1 jersey his own. So, he had no hesitation in signing a new deal with them.

Goalkeeper Maxwell joined from Fleetwood last summer but has now agreed a 12-month extension, which will keep him at North End until 2020.

And, having made 29 appearances for the Lilywhites before the weekend, the 26-year-old admits he is loving life at Deepdale.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Maxwell. “It is fantastic knowing I’m going to be here for an extra year as well.

“It gives me an opportunity to help progress Preston and hopefully progress myself in the process.

“When I first came here, I said I wanted to make the No.1 shirt my own.

“I wanted to play week in, week out for Preston and at the moment I’m doing that.”

Maxwell is currently keeping 32-year-old former Manchester United stopper Anders Lindegaard out of the team, and boss Simon Grayson claims the friendly rivalry helps both men.

Grayson said: “It is good to have a high level of competition and, hopefully, they will continue to push each other to even better things.”
