Baz, you missed out on a diamond

The Football League Paper - - LEAGUE TWO -

BARRY Fry is the last man you’d expect to miss a trick in the transfer market – as the £7m pocketed from Dwight Gayle’s various transfers demonstrates. Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd, Aaron McLean: Peterborough’s director of football regularly scours the grimmer reaches of the football pyramid for untapped talent and has a wider network of informants than the Stasi. But even Big Baz doesn’t get it right all the time. In 2011, Fry took a call from Mark Stimson, the former Gillingham boss, to say he’d spotted a rough diamond. “I’d seen this young guy playing for Hinckley, a striker with frightening pace,” said Stimson. “I said to Baz, ‘If you don’t get him then someone else will’. For once, though, Fry wasn’t impressed. Which is a shame because the player in question was Andre Gray, Premier League striker, England hopeful and a man flogged for fees totalling more than £10m!
