BENTLEY FUMES AT DEAL FOR ACE TOM

The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP -

MORECAMBE boss Jim Bentley has revealed his anger at the deal in which striker Tom Barkhuizen left for Preston.

The ex-Blackpool man mutually cancelled his contract at the Shrimps in November while the club experienced cash flow problems, and Morecambe received compensation after he signed a deal for North End that same month.

Barkhuizen, 23, scored 17 goals in 60 appearances for the Shrimps before his wages became an issue for the cash-strapped club, which eventually resulted in his departure.

Bentley believes those who handled the deal could have done a lot better in protecting the interests of Morecambe as Barkhuizen is flourishing at Deepdale with four goals in his first eight games.

“Let’s not forget we’ve sold our best player who is now pulling up trees at Preston,” Bentley told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“For me, the people who negotiated that deal could’ve done better.”
