NEWCASTLE United and Brighton took a giant stride towards the Premier League yesterday. Goals from Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie helped the Magpies beat relegationthreatened Wigan 2-1, while Glenn Murray netted the onlygoal as Brighton edged out Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn.

Meanwhile, substitute Jackson Irvine scored deep in stoppage time as Burton shocked third-placed Huddersfield with a 1-0 away win.

It means leaders Newcastle and second-placed Brighton have a lead of ten and nine points respectively over the Terriers, who have a game in hand.

Rotherham were relegated after losing 1-0 at home against Fulham.
