COLCHESTER head coach John McGreal believes a renewed bond between players and fans will give his side the edge in the battle for the play-offs.

The U’s have been brutally hit by injuries, with 21-year-old midfielder Sammie Szmodics and defender Lewis Kinsella, 22, both out for four months following ankle surgery – a tough blow for two such young players.

More recently, 25-yearold centre-back Tom Eastman sustained a ligament injury and has not played since February, but McGreal is grateful to supporters for keeping spirits high.

“You feel that connection between the players and the fans,” he said.

“That’s what we’ve wanted to get back and we’ve done that by winning games of football.

“We have had tons of injuries to contend with, but it’s an exciting time now.

“We want to make some noise on the pitch and, hopefully, the fans will be right behind us as they have been throughout the season.

“We have to be excited. It’s a fabulous opportunity we have but I think there will be a few more twists and turns in the play-off race yet.”
