The answer, from now on, should be the former after boss Nathan Jones went with a trio of centre-backs that meant he ditched the much-maligned diamond formation in midfield, played wingbacks and, as a result, overran a Notts County side with one mind on the beach.

As it is, only a mathematical miracle will now deny Town a place in the play-offs – a format in which they have never triumphed. But if the Hatters had played like this at home more often this season they would have comfortably sealed automatic promotion.

They came from behind at home, which so often has been their Achilles heel at Kenilworth Road this term, with goal hero Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu immense in midfield, while Danny Hylton should have made the scoreline more emphatic.

Instead, more annoyingly. he got another disciplinary black mark against his name
