GARETH MAKES TOUGH CALLS...
GARETH Ainsworth admits it is one of the “hardest parts of the job” to release players from the club as Wycombe prepare for another season in League Two.
Veteran midfielder Garry Thompson, 36, who scored at White Hart Lane in a 4-3 FA Cup defeat by Tottenham this season, and full-back Sam Wood, 30, have been let go by Ainsworth.
Defender Aaron Pierre, 24, has been offered a new deal and the Chairboys are still in talks with ex-QPR and Brentford midfielder Marcus Bean, 33.
“It’s the hardest part of the job for me to say goodbye to players who have given everything for the club,” said Ainsworth. “In Garry and Sam we’ve had two fantastic professionals who have played a huge part in this club’s recent progress.
“Next year we want to go one better and compete in the top seven, and I don’t feel that Garry or Sam would feature as often as they would like, particularly at this stage of their careers.
“Therefore I’ve made the tough decision to let them go and I know there’ll be many other managers out there who would love to have such great guys in their squad.”
