READ­ING reached the Cham­pi­onship play­off fi­nal last sea­son – but they were given a rude awak­en­ing as the new sea­son kicked off.

Un­fan­cied QPR tri­umped 2-0 with a dou­ble from Conor Washing­ton. The sec­ond goal came from the spot af­ter Read­ing cen­tre-back Ti­ago Ilori was sent off for pulling back Pawel Ws­zolek. There was a touch of con­tro­versy about it be­cause the Roy­als’ Jon Dadi Bod­vars­son was down in­jured at the time.

R’s boss Ian Hol­loway had sym­pa­thy for the Roy­als: “The ref­eree could have blown be­fore – the fella was on the floor. It ain’t half harsh. But that’s life.”

Hull spoiled John Terry’s As­ton Villa de­but by fight­ing back to earn a 1-1 draw, while Wolves beat Mid­dles­brough 1-0.

In League Two, Lu­ton romped to an as­ton­ish­ing 8-2 win against Yeovil with striker James Collins scor­ing a hat-trick on de­but.
