CAT FAN HONEY’S KEEN TO BUILD ON CUP WIN

The Football League Paper - - CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW -

GEORGE Honeyman fulfilled a childhood dream by scoring his first goal for Sunderland – and has promised there is more to come, writes Andy Edwards. Honeyman is the only boyhood Sunderland fan in Simon Grayson’s squad and realises the importance of getting the Black Cats back to the Premier League at the first attempt. The 22-year-old midfielder from Prudhoe scored the winner in Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie against Bury, but he knows the key is to start winning games in the Championship. Grayson’s side beganwith a 1-1 draw at home to Derby and, ahead of today’s game, Honeyman is keen to build on that cup win. He said: “The teams we’re playing at the minute are hopefully going to be our rivals at the end of the season. If we can get a few wins up on them now and get a bit of momentum, it will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.” And Honeyman is keen to keep impressing Grayson, to ensure he retains his place in the team. He added: “I’m not fussed where the manager plays me. I just want to be out on the pitch. “He gives me good licence to get on the ball and try to make things happen. I still want to be better in the final third. There’s definitely stuff I can still work on.”

GOAL: George Honeyman
