McGIVERN’S IN TO STRENGTHEN THE COBBLERS
NORTHERN Ireland centrehalf Ryan McGivern has signed a contract with Northampton Town until January.
The 27-year-old became a free agent in the August transfer window and was most recently with Shrewsbury after spells with Hibernian in 2013-14 and Port Vale from 2014-16.
The 6ft 2in defender played for his country in the 0-0 draw with the Czech Republic in September and joins the Cobblers to provide squad depth.
“Ryan has been training with us for a few weeks and has done well,” said Northampton manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
“I feel we need to strengthen the squad in the central defensive areas and he will come in to do that.
“With Regan Poole playing a lot of his football in midfield recently and Leon Barnett recovering from injury, Ash Taylor and Aaron Pierre have done very well, but they have had to play a lot of football recently and haven't had the benefit of competition for their places.
“Ryan coming in provides that and, with him having been on the training ground with us for a while, we have had the chance to have a look at him and he has already fitted in well with the group.”
