Prank fundraising ‘drive’

A prankster has set-up an online fundraising campaign – for a new drive.

Matt Mckerlie from Castle Douglas created the tongue- in- cheek crowdfunding project on JustGiving because he’d had enough of reading “sob stories”.

As a response, he made the “Help me get a driveway for my house” page with the ambitious target of raising £10,000.

Matt, who works for Openreach, said: “I’d had enough of people asking for donations for sob stories when that’s not really what it’s supposed to be about.

“I came up with the idea of doing one for a laugh and the first thing I thought of when I looked out of the window was a drive.

“It’s had quite a lot of views. It was really just for a bit of humour because there’s no need for these sob stories. It’s supposed to be used for charities, not for people’s life problems as harsh as that may sound.

“I was in an accident at work and sat with time on my hands so thought I’d set it up.”

So far 10 people have donated the grand total of £38, which may create something of a dilemma for Matt.

He said: “I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it. I suppose if it reaches the target I’ll need to get a drive!

“Ideally I’d donate it to charity but then the people that donated might accuse me of fraud because I haven’t used it for a drive. Maybe I could buy a bag of sand and put the photo on Facebook.”
