Squirrel network camera funding
The Solway Forests Red Squirrel Network has received a grant to let it buy vital equipment.
The voluntary conservation group has been handed £200 from Red Alert South West Scotland.
The cash will allow the new group to buy camera equipment to monitor the movement and location of red and grey squirrels.
The incursion of greys into the region and the resultant transmission of the squirrelpox virus poses a serious threat to the Solway forests’ red squirrel population.
Red Alert South West Scotland’s Jamie Carruthers said: “I am delighted that Red Alert South West Scotland is able to support the Solway Forests Red Squirrel Network.
“The network’s contribution to the conservation of the red squirrel is vitally important if this endangered species is to continue to thrive in Dumfries and Galloway.”
