Concern over A75 closures

MSP raises questions about Ramhill works

Roads bosses have been criticised for plans to close the A75 for five nights.

The main road will be shut at the Ramhill, Castle Douglas, from 7pm until 6am from Sunday until Friday for resurfacing.

Cars and lorries will be diverted through Haugh of Urr.

That has prompted Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson to question whether a full closure is really needed and if the detour route is appropriate.

He said: “While I am always pleased to see maintenance work done, I am concerned that this will cause unnecessary disruption to villagers on the diversion route.

“Similar works have previously been done under a convoy system, so I see no reason why this cannot be done this time as well.

“Residents have already raised concerns over these full closures with me and, if there is no alternative, Transport Scotland must put in calming measures to alleviate the fears of villagers.”

Andy Fraser from Transerv, which is responsible for maintaining the road, said: “The A75 is an important economic artery wi t h many communities and businesses along the route.

“This work has been scheduled to be delivered with maximum effi- ciency and minimal disruption.”

Transerv’s network area manager Michael Pagan added: “This is an important programme of work which has been scheduled in consultation with local authorities, emergency services and stakeholders.

“We are making every effort to keep disruption to communities and businesses to an absolute minimum while this is undertaken.

“Following a prolonged winter, with repeated freeze-thaw cycles, the carriageway has deteriorated.

“We have worked to schedule the programme outwith the busy summer and school holidays. Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles.”
