Body of miss­ing doc­tor found in wood­land

Tributes have poured in for Dr Ge­orge Por­te­ous af­ter his body was found fol­low­ing ex­ten­sive searches.

Po­lice, moun­tain res­cue and un­der­wa­ter teams scoured the area around Beeswing af­ter Dr Por­te­ous, 51, went miss­ing last week.

They dis­cov­ered a man’s body onTues­day morn­ing in wood­land. He was iden­ti­fied as the doc­tor and his fam­ily was in­formed.

A po­lice spokesman said;“There are no sus­pi­cious cir­cum­stances and a re­port will be sub­mit­ted to the procu­ra­tor fis­cal.”

His car was found aban­doned near Beeswing last week spark­ing fears for his safety and friends in­sisted his dis­ap­pear­ance was“out of char­ac­ter”.

Dr Por­te­ous, who lived at Islesteps, had gone miss­ing af­ter leav­ing work at the Locker­bie Med­i­cal Prac­tice lastTues­day night.

The alarm was raised when the doc­tor, known as Alex, failed to re­turn to his home in Islesteps.

His car was dis­cov­ered at Beeswing onThurs­day prompt­ing an in­ten­sive search of the area over the fol­low­ing days.

Finally, the grim dis­cov­ery of Dr Por­te­ous’body was made by y of­fi­cers in woods near the vil­lage.

An NHS spokesman said:“It is with great sad­ness that we have learned of the death of Dr Alex Por­te­ous, GP at Locker­bie Med­i­cal Prac­tice.”

A mes­sage on the Locker­bie prac­tice web­site read:“It is with great sad­ness that we learned of the death of Dr Por­te­ous. He will be sorely missed by us all.”

And Dr Grecy Bell, Deputy Med­i­cal Direc­tor of Dum­fries and Gal­loway Health and So­cial Care Part­ner­ship, said:“All our thoughts are with Dr Por­te­ous’fam­ily, friends, col­leagues and pa­tients at the prac­tice at this time.”
