Saints’ poor start to the season continues
St Cuthbert Wanderers comanager Craig Fraser is hoping to solve a confidence concern in his squad.
The Kirkcudbright side is without a win in five games and was beaten by Abbey Vale in the first round of the Cree Lodge Cup on Saturday.
This weekend Saints return to St Mary’s for South of Scotland League action against bottom of the table Newton Stewart. However, that is no straightforward fixture.
Fraser said: “To be fair Newton Stewart have had a very hard start to the season. It’s an opportunity for them to get up and running. Because last week I would’ve thought ‘they’ll be low in confidence as they haven’t won’. But sod’s law they won on Saturday in the cup! So they’ll be high in confidence now. “We know what this league is like and we know every team is capable of beating each other so there’s no easy games.
“Confidence in football can be lost very quickly and it’s very hard to get it back.
“We’ve been training well and playing well in spells but at the minute its down to confidence.
“When players are low in confidence you can see players hide and they don’t want the ball as much. Decision making isn’t as good either and when you’re higher in confidence you play better. It is over to us in the coaching team to sort it.”
Tommy Goss and Declan Tremble scored after the break for Abbey Vale as the Saints crashed out of the cup.
Craig said: “It was another disappointing weekend to be fair.
“I didn’t think there was an awful lot in the game and the first half was even stevens. We didn’t do enough in our passages of play and there wasn’t a lot happening.
“We could’ve went in leading at half time but it was 0-0 and we didn’t get a rhythm going. It was a bit better in the second half but we’re lacking confidence at the minute and that’s up to us as the management team to sort out.
“A couple of big decisions we felt went against us but we won’t hide behind any of that.”
