Friends and members of Gatehouse Festival Group have said a fond farewell to Franca Bruno who is moving to Italy.

They presented her with a lasting reminder of Gatehouse, an oil painting of the town’s High Street by local artist Richard Brinley, during Thursday’s music session at the Masonic Arms.

Making the presentation, Roger Hampshire, honorary president and founder of the original festival group, described Franca’s imminent departure as the end of an era.

He recalled her work for the festival group since 1993 and later as a community councillor and provost. Roger said: “You have done a great deal to bring benefits and fun to our town.”

Festival chairman Michelle McClure also thanked Franca and said she would be much missed by all her friends and the community as a whole.

Franca said she would treasure the painting as a reminder of her happy time in Gatehouse.

She thanked Roger and Lyn Hampshire for letting her run her shop at the Rutherford Hall since 2005 and gave special thanks to her friends and colleagues, Liz Modrate and Nancy Thompson, saying she could not have managed the business without them.
