The Swiss Fed­eral In­sti­tute of Aquatic Science and Tech­nol­ogy es­ti­mates that 43kg of gold passes through the coun­try’s waste sys­tem each year. Worth about £1.3m, this is a re­sult of the residue from nu­mer­ous gold re­finer­ies in Switzer­land, where most of the world’s gold is pro­cessed.
