Age shall not weary him

The Guardian - Review - - Review -

I love John le Carré’s Smiley with a passion yet, despite John Banville’s explanation of the vague timescale in the new novel, I have difficulty in imagining George saying anything at all in 2017. In one of the early novels I remember him observing Kristallnacht from a window in Germany as a student/spy. Even by shoehorning Smiley into this interlude as a 16-year-old, and placing it in 1939 instead of earlier, I can’t credit him with being much younger than 93. Despite this, I suspend disbelief. shadeboz from the website
