Benítez is back at the train­ing ground

Rafael Benítez is ex­pected to be back in the New­cas­tle dugout for Satur­day’s Premier League game with Stoke. The 57-year-old Spa­niard fi­nally re­turned to Ty­ne­side on Mon­day evening hav­ing three times had to can­cel the jour­ney from his fam­ily home on the Wir­ral as he con­tin­ued to re­cover from surgery. He was back be­hind his desk yes­ter­day as the play­ers en­joyed a day off, and is due back on the train­ing pitch to­day to start the process of plot­ting a third suc­ces­sive top-flight vic­tory. Benítez was an arm­chair spec­ta­tor on Sun­day as the Mag­pies won 1-0 at Swansea days af­ter he un­der­went a pro­ce­dure to ad­dress an in­fec­tion re­sult­ing from an ear­lier her­nia oper­a­tion. He was in reg­u­lar touch with the coaches Paco de Miguel Moreno and Mikel An­tía through­out the game and ad­dressed the play­ers as a group by phone be­fore kick-off. He will now re­sume con­trol and may have to speak to sev­eral mem­bers of his squad af­ter a tur­bu­lent trans­fer win­dow.

Rangers will travel to Canada to play Ben­fica in Oc­to­ber, the Ibrox club have con­firmed. Their Por­tuguese man­ager, Pe­dro Caix­inha, will thus come face to face with his coun­try­man Rui Vi­to­ria in the 2017 Euse­bio Cup match at Tim Hor­tons Field in Hamil­ton, On­tario, on Fri­day 6 Oc­to­ber. The game will take place at the home of the Cana­dian League’s Hamil­ton Tiger-Cats dur­ing the in­ter­na­tional break with a 7pm kick-off lo­cal time (mid­night BST). The Euse­bio Cup is held ev­ery year.
