It’s the weekend Look out for …

1 Flights to the finish

The BBC’s broadcast of last year’s PDC Champions League of Darts brought in, at its peak, 850,000 viewers – about half as many as saw the end of the BDO World Championship in 2016. It still signed up for three more years, and the 2017 event starts in Cardiff today.

2 Slim pickings

In June Billy Joe Saunders looked out of shape as he interrupted a London press conference intended to publicise the Genady Golovkin v Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez megafight (which finally takes place tonight) to demand a go against the winner. Golovkin told him “to lose a lot of pounds” before asking again and he seems to have been heeded – a slimmed-down Saunders defends his WBO middleweight world title live on Sky against Willie Monroe Jr.

3 Basement cracks

It is too early for relegation sixpointers but today’s meeting of the league’s bottom two, Port Vale and Forest Green Rovers, might come to be seen as one.

3 A long and winding road

As if he hasn’t won enough already this year, Chris Froome is going for a couple more gongs at the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen (Eurosport). Sky have never won the team time trial but send a strong group to Norway including Froome and Geraint Thomas for tomorrow’s race; Lizzie Deignan’s Boels-Doelmans team will hope to repeat last year’s success in the women’s event.

5 Poetry and motion

A host of big-name performers will entertain fans at the Singapore Grand Prix over the weekend, including Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande, Duran Duran and, incongruously, the Neasden-based spoken-word artist George the Poet.
