Vijay Iyer Sextet London

The Guardian - The Guide - - Music - John Fordham

Former maths and physics brainiac and prize-winning pianist and composer Vijay Iyer dauntingly fuses African, American, Indian and mathsinspired rhythmic ideas in his work. Somehow it always feels accessible and cool, his bands sounding uncannily joined at the hip even if they seem to be simultaneously investigating completely different tunes. Iyer has had a regular residency at the Wigmore Hall this year, and for this visit brings his powerful horn-packed sextet, who carry echoes of 60s and 70s Miles Davis, the Bad Plus, and plenty of bluesy, folk-rooted music, too.
