The Guardian - Travel - - Front Page -

Amsterdam

It takes just 4hr 40min to reach the Netherlands by train, with a change in Brussels, from £99 return booking with Eurostar or b-europe.com. P&O Ferries sails overnight from Hull to Rotterdam, while DFDS Seaways sails overnight from Newcastle to Ijmuiden, near Amsterdam.

Family resort near Paris

Eurostar links London, Ebbsfleet and Ashford with Marne La Vallée for Disneyland. But there’s now another resort near the same station: Villages Nature Paris. This promises family activities in five “immersive worlds” including Aqualagon, with a geothermally heated water park.

Venice

The daily Thello sleeper whisks passengers from Paris to Venice overnight for as little as €35 in a couchette or from €95 in a two-bed sleeper. Few train arrivals can beat rumbling across the causeway over the lagoon into central Venice. Book the Thello at loco2.com.

San Sebastián, Spain

Donostia (in Basque) is easy to reach without flying: take Eurostar to Paris from £58 return and a TGV from Paris to Hendaye on the French-Spanish border for as little as €25 each way at loco2.com. From here, metro trains run to San Sebastián every half hour in 37 minutes for €2.35.

Tangier, Morocco

Tangier is a two-day trip from London by train. Take Eurostar and TGV to Barcelona, stay overnight, then on to Algeciras. You arrive in time for the bus to Tarifa and last ferry to Tangier. The journey costs from £149 each way.
