Israel backs down on al-Aqsa security
7 Israel announced the removal of metal detectors from the entrances to the compound that houses the al-Aqsa mosque in a move designed to end a crisis over the holy site.
The statement came after days of violent confrontations that have claimed seven lives.
However, Muslim religious officials – including the mufti of Jerusalem – said they would only accept a return to the access arrangements that were in place before a 14 July shooting of two Israeli policemen by three Israeli Arab gunmen who had smuggled weapons on to the site. Israeli officials added that some cameras that had been installed would also be removed.
