Is­rael backs down on al-Aqsa se­cu­rity

7 Is­rael an­nounced the re­moval of metal de­tec­tors from the en­trances to the com­pound that houses the al-Aqsa mosque in a move de­signed to end a cri­sis over the holy site.

The state­ment came af­ter days of vi­o­lent con­fronta­tions that have claimed seven lives.

How­ever, Mus­lim re­li­gious of­fi­cials – in­clud­ing the mufti of Jerusalem – said they would only ac­cept a re­turn to the ac­cess ar­range­ments that were in place be­fore a 14 July shoot­ing of two Is­raeli po­lice­men by three Is­raeli Arab gun­men who had smug­gled weapons on to the site. Is­raeli of­fi­cials added that some cam­eras that had been in­stalled would also be re­moved.
