Liberian court halts election runoff

The Guardian Weekly - - World Roundup -

Liberia’s supreme court ordered a halt to this week’s scheduled runoff election amid allegations of fraud in the first round. The former footballer George Weah had been due to go head-to-head with Joseph Boakai, the country’s deputy president. Both are vying to take over from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as her 12 years in power come to an end.

A successful vote would be Liberia’s first democratic transfer of power in over 70 years. But the Supreme Court’s order for a full investigation into the allegations could push back the runoff date by weeks or even result in a rerun of the first round.
