Vol­cano forces Pa­cific is­land evac­u­a­tion

11 A vol­cano in Pa­pua New Guinea be­gan spew­ing ash, forc­ing the evac­u­a­tion of more than 500 res­i­dents.

Kadovar Is­land, a 365-me­tre tall vol­canic is­land, was thought to be dor­mant un­til it be­gan erupt­ing on 5 Jan­uary. The eruption may cul­mi­nate in an ex­plo­sion, with a risk of tsunamis and land­slides, the Rabaul Vol­canolo Ob­ser­va­tory was re­ported as say­ing.
