Poll moves Montenegro closer to EU

4 Pro-Euro­pean Union leader Milo ÐjukanoviĆ won Montenegro’s pres­i­den­tial elec­tion to ex­tend his dom­i­nance over the coun­try’s pol­i­tics.

The state elec­tion com­mis­sion’s pre­lim­i­nary count showed he won 54.1% of last Sun­day’s vote with 97% counted; Mladen Bo­janiĆ won 33.2% on a 63.9% turnout. Bo­janiĆ, a busi­ness­man, ran on a plat­form of closer ties with Rus­sia.

ÐjukanoviĆ and his Demo­cratic Party of So­cial­ists (DPS) led the Balkan repub­lic of 620,000 peo­ple into Nato last year and he has pledged to com­plete talks for EU mem­ber­ship.
