Out­cry forces Weibo to re­verse gay ban

10 One of China’s largest so­cial me­dia sites, Sina Weibo, re­versed a ban on on­line con­tent “re­lated to ho­mo­sex­u­al­ity” af­ter an out­cry from users.

Last Fri­day, Sina Weibo said it would re­move con­tent “with porno­graphic im­pli­ca­tions, pro­mot­ing bloody vi­o­lence, or re­lated to ho­mo­sex­u­al­ity”. In re­sponse, users posted pho­tos with their part­ners, com­ments and rain­bow emo­jis. Many quoted China’s con­sti­tu­tion and laws about the pro­tec­tion of mi­nori­ties.

Fol­low­ing the del­uge Sina Weibo said on Mon­day its cam­paign would now ex­clude gay con­tent.
