National Youth Jazz Orchestra ofScotland NYOS £10 If the Kellock-SteeleMilligan generation is regarded as a golden age of Scottish jazz, the next crop of musicians is determined to keep the Saltire flying. This CD, based around arrangements of three old Scots songs, finds the orchestra sounding far more mature than their youth might suggest. There are several excellent solos from pianist Alan Benzie and tenor saxophonist Grant Irvine investigates Auld Lang Syne with a light, appropriately Scottish approach. The well-drilled fun of Duncan Lamont’s Carnival of the Animals suite and two standards offer further evidence of energy, confidence and no end of promise.
