Stokowski Naxos £5.99 Who remembers the vast, bloated orchestral transcriptions of baroque music by Leopold Stokowski? Well, conductor Jose Serebrier (he is getting around these days) clearly does, to judge from his ripe, luscious and fleshly performances of enough of these sweetmeats to furnish a 12course banquet, played with unselfconscious sumptuousness by the conductor and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Hear the Air on the G string as you have never imagined it, and many others, with a Technicolor version of Dido’s lament, Hollywood weepie-style, that demands amulti-pack of tissues to mop up the tears. As an aficionado of bad taste, I love it to bits. Yummy yucky.
