It is, of course, rather rich whenBush and his min­ions at the Mur­doch-backed pro­pa­ganda ma­chine that is Fox News crit­i­cise Al Jazeera for its pro-Arab bias. Saudi-born jour­nal­ist Miles re­veals quite a dif­fer­ent story in this well­writ­ten and even-handed ac­count of theArab news chan­nel. Miles tells the chan­nel’s story fromits in­cep­tion in 1996, right through to its ex­plo­sion on to the global scene in spec­tac­u­lar fash­ion af­ter 9/11. rhymes with “gay”, “storm” with “for­lorn” and “hearts full of woe” are “lost in ameadow dot­ted with snow”. There is lit­tle to com­mend this com­pi­la­tion, even in an iron­i­cal sense. Apoor reader can tol­er­ate only so much, so out of the win­dow it should be hurled into touch.
