JOINT VEN­TURE MAY JOIN RACE FOR EAST COAST ROUTE

Two Scot­tish trans­port groups are poised to com­pete to run the East Coast Main Line rail route af­ter Perth­based Stage­coach said its Vir­gin Rail joint ven­ture is in­ter­ested in the Lon­don to Scot­land route. The news came as it un­veiled a 44% in­crease in un­der­ly­ing pre-tax profit to £108.7m for the six months to Oc­to­ber 31 fol­low­ing strong growth across its UK bus and rail busi­nesses and its US bus op­er­a­tion. Stage­coach said Vir­gin Rail is likely to bid again for the West Coast route it cur­rently runs.
