Blair and Bar­clay ready for final push

MIKE BLAIR and John Bar­clay are both ex­pected to face Italy at Rome’s Olympic Sta­dium to­day af­ter un­der­go­ing thor­ough fit­ness test­ing ac­cord­ing to Andy Robin­son, the Scot­land team’s head coach.

“Blair has passed ev­ery step so far,” he said ahead of yes­ter­day’s team run.

“There’s been a pro­gres­sion – stage one was last night, treat­ments and some pass­ing – got through stage two this morn­ing and stage three is the team run. So far he’s pro­gressed well.

“John Bar­clay will have a fit­ness test on his ribs but we ex­pect him to be fine. He trained with us on Wed­nes­day.”

As he fi­nalised the prepa­ra­tions for Scot­land’s first ever “white­wash de­cider”, Robin­son in­sisted that the same ba­sics that he has sought to in­sist upon through­out the cham­pi­onship re­main the key to vic­tory to­day.

“What do we need to do... score more points than the op­po­si­tion,” he said.

“That will oc­cur by not giv­ing Italy penal­ties at scrum-time. We’ve got to be very phys­i­cal and scrum as an eight, they’ll try the dou­ble shove and we have to make our tack­les and put them on the floor but have
