Five clubs are eyeing up a double celebration at the second phase of the SIBA National Championships at Coatbridge this weekend, and three are in the frame to retain titles, writes Anne Dunwoodie.

Blantyre’s Iain Mclean and Craig and Brian Irvine continue the defence of their triples crown against a strong Midlothian team skipped by Colin Walker. Lorna Cameron’s Whiteinch rink, who won the British championship at Swansea two weeks ago, tackle Isobel Laing’s Elgin foursome as they attempt to hold on to their Scottish title.

And Balbardie’s Sharon Leitch and Lorraine Malloy, who also won in 2006, meet Paisley’s Ann Marie Fletcher and Cathy Houston as they attempt to become the first three-time champions in the women’s pairs.

Blantyre, Elgin, Midlothian, Arbroath and the host club all line up in two events. Elgin are also in the men’s pairs where Andy Barker and Mike Stepney, winners in 2006 and 2010, open against Paul Foster and Alex Adrain from Prestwick. The winners will face East Fife or Cumbernauld in the final tomorrow.

Midlothian’s Stacey Laidlaw and Carol Ashby meet Arbroath’s Leanne Furye and Caroline Ruxton in the ladies pairs. The Arbroath twosome are then involved in the triples, while Coatbridge line up in both triples competitions.
