Falcons soar to Pool 3 victory
NEWCASTLE FALCONS took early control of Pool Three with a creditable 30-26 victory at Newport Gwent Dragons. Will Witty, Mark Wilson and Lee Smith helped Newcastle match Newport’s three tries, before Lee Smith’s long-range penalty strike secured a vital win for Dean Richards’ side.
The Falcons backed up their 43-19 victory over Bucharest by denying the Dragons a chance to make it two wins from two matches, the Welsh side having triumphed 38-22 at Stade Francais the previous week.
London Irish were able to maintain a 100 per cent record, however, with a four-try, bonus-point victory at Grenoble to stay top of Pool One. The Exiles won out 25-15 following tries from Shane Geraghty, Halani Aulika, Alex Lewington and Luke Narraway. Pool Two, meanwhile, was opened up following La Rochelle’s 25-13 victory over Bayonne and Brive fell to a 26-21 home defeat by Italians Zebre.
In the Champions Cup, Munster defeated Saracens 14-3 at Thomond Park. Dave Kilcoyne came off the bench to score a decisive 60th-minute try, while Rhys Gill was in the sin-bin.
