Fal­cons soar to Pool 3 vic­tory

NEW­CAS­TLE FAL­CONS took early con­trol of Pool Three with a cred­itable 30-26 vic­tory at New­port Gwent Dragons. Will Witty, Mark Wilson and Lee Smith helped New­cas­tle match New­port’s three tries, be­fore Lee Smith’s long-range penalty strike se­cured a vi­tal win for Dean Richards’ side.

The Fal­cons backed up their 43-19 vic­tory over Bucharest by denying the Dragons a chance to make it two wins from two matches, the Welsh side hav­ing tri­umphed 38-22 at Stade Fran­cais the pre­vi­ous week.

London Ir­ish were able to main­tain a 100 per cent record, how­ever, with a four-try, bonus-point vic­tory at Greno­ble to stay top of Pool One. The Ex­iles won out 25-15 fol­low­ing tries from Shane Ger­aghty, Halani Au­lika, Alex Lew­ing­ton and Luke Narraway. Pool Two, mean­while, was opened up fol­low­ing La Rochelle’s 25-13 vic­tory over Bay­onne and Brive fell to a 26-21 home de­feat by Ital­ians Ze­bre.

In the Cham­pi­ons Cup, Mun­ster de­feated Sara­cens 14-3 at Thomond Park. Dave Kil­coyne came off the bench to score a de­ci­sive 60th-minute try, while Rhys Gill was in the sin-bin.
