There were few chances and no goals in the first European Championship encounter between the two countries. In an eight-team tournament, both sides were eliminated in a group also featuring England and Belgium, with the latter making their way through to the final only to lose to West Germany. Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas emerged as the national hero, saving two out of the four Italian penalties, after a tense match which Spain dictated but could not convert that dominance into goals. Despite coming into the tournament as reigning world champions, Italy looked to have fallen a long way from their 2006 heroics in Germany while this shoot-out success helped Spain on their way to the first of three major tournament successes in a row.
