Location: North Lanarkshire Map: OS Landranger 65 Distance: 11 miles (17km) Time: 1-1.5 hours Terrain: Undulating; B- and A-roads, minor roads DESPITE being pretty much bang in the middle of the Central Belt there are some great cycling roads and views around Shotts.
From Shotts train station take Station Road to join Shottskirk Road. Follow the road left at a junction signed for the motorway to pass a factory on your right. Leave the road to cycle through Shotts Nature Park accessed by the Central Scotland Forest Trust buildings.
Pedal along the avenue to enjoy extensive views over the North Lanarkshire countryside. At the road go left for a grand descent by Hartwood. Further on, climb and bear left onto the A-road into Allanton. Take the first right by a church to return to the countryside along a pleasant wooded stretch. At a grassy triangle go left and ahead turn left onto Daviesdykes Road. The roads here are very quiet.
Pedal on to a T-junction. Turn left to return to the A71. A right and first left turn leads over a small bridge. Then bear right onto the busier Rosehall Road back to Shotts.
