This stunning series and Killing Eve are so far ahead of most British television drama of the moment it’s not even funny. The two are very different, yet almost operate as flipsides of each other: both shows can do action, but can do so much more; both are unafraid to experiment stylistically and wander into strange, heightened, theatrical space; and, while Killing Eve lies much closer to straight-warped black comedy, both have a core of humour at heart. Writer-director-producer Hugo Blick’s dense, sometimes opaque plot moves off in another direction tonight, explaining more about the Rwandan president, whose role in this bloody chess game has so far only been hinted. Completing his Orson Welles act, Blick continues chewing into one of the meatiest roles with his performance as steel-rat lawyer Blake Gaines.
