Glasgow, Love And Apartheid 9pm, BBC Two
Shown to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s trip to Scotland, this documentary offers an intimate, deeply personal reflection on the history and effects of South Africa’s apartheid policy. Focus falls on her father, Radha, an Indian South African, whose parents saw their home and business taken away after racist segregation became law in the country in 1948. Travelling to the UK seeking the education he was denied at home, Radha attended Glasgow University, where he met and married white Glaswegian Maggie. The couple, now in their 70s, journey back to South Africa and reflect upon their own fight against apartheid, while considering how the country has changed since Mandela’s release from prison. Super-8 home movies and archive newsreel help bring memories vividly to life.
