T IS exactly the kind of house you would expect an awardwinning designer to create. Shiro House, i n Cammo Grove in Edinburgh, has been a labour of love for Colin Wong, a former National Kitchen Designer of the Year. “I wanted to create a house unlike anything else you would usually find in Edinburgh,” he says. “Something different, with a design edge, that had depth and personality. Hopefully, that’s what I have achieved.” Shiro House is a spectacular, contemporary home, finished to the highest of specifications. From the moment you walk into the double height hallway, the attention to detail is obvious, f rom the clean lines to the impressive elm and steel staircase. “I’m inspired by my travels and my Asian background but sometimes too, by something much closer to hom e ,” explains Colin. “The wood c ame f r om a 150-year-old elm tree from Inverness, for example.” At Shiro House, t he g r o und floor rooms flow into each other - the living room, for

example, provides a generous entertaining space with an impressive stove and door leading onto the slated patio.
The unique angled fin wall subtly provides shadowing from the sitting room to the dining kitchen. The latter, as you might expect from a leading kitchen designer, is sumptuous, with high q ual i t y Ger man f ur ni t ur e, Siemens appliances and lovely quartz and corian work surfaces.

“One of the biggest mistakes people make when designing a home is to do the overall design first and leave the kitchen almost as an afterthought,” says Colin.
“Both should go hand in hand. Being able to work on this has been a real labour of love. I design things on bits of paper when they come in to my head.”
