Councils’ second thoughts

New legislation brings in the possibility of no council tax discounts for additional homes

The Herald - Scotland's Homes - - News - THE VOICE OF PROPERTY Beverley Brown

LEGISLATION to remove the automatic council tax discount for second homes has been laid in Parliament, paving the way for further reforms due to take effect from April 2017.

This change will give councils the option of offering no discount for second homes, arming them with another lever to encourage better use of housing stock in their areas. While the news may not be well received by second homeowners, if all councils were to remove discounts it could generate up to £3 million of additional revenue across the country.

Development celebrated

A GROUNDBREAKING housing development in Coatbridge by Dundas Estates has been named Best Residential Development in Central Scotland in the UK Property Awards 2016-2017.

This is the third major industry award for Calderwood Village, which will now compete against the best property across the UK in a bid to secure the same category on a national level.

Calderwood is the first ‘Yours’ Sustainable Community in Scotland – a unique development focused on community spirit, with importance placed on street planning, outdoor space and a Community Hub available for use by all residents.

Plans are in place to expand the village to provide 350 family homes once complete.

Putting Children 1st

BARRATT Homes East Scotland has raised an impressive £25,000 – more than double its £10,000 target – for Scotland’s national children’s charity, Children 1st, the house builder’s chosen charity of the year.

To date, money has been raised from a sponsored walk and cycle and a Munro climb.

Meanwhile, a youth football team from Dyce now has a smart new look thanks to sponsorship from Barratt North Scotland, which has funded new team strips in time for the start of the football season.

What makes a home?

SAVILLS has launched a Moving Stories campaign to explore the complex relationship between homes and home owners with funny, sad and bittersweet personal reflections on moving out, moving in and moving on.

The campaign uses social media - including blogs – to ask clients, contacts, friends and family for stories that illustrate the theme: What makes a house a home and why does it matter so much?
