LIGHT, in all its forms, is what makes this week’s Hot Property particularly beautiful. Natural sunlight; flickering firelight; impressive interior designer lighting all add to the considerable charm of Owlswood, a stunning contemporary home in the Ayrshire village of Alloway. Owner Rona McCluskie was captivated by the setting of the property when she bought it nine years ago. “It’s such a beautiful place,” she explains. “The countryside is charming and I always wanted to live somewhere I could hear the sound of the sea. “We searched a long time before we found Owlswood and it really is in a perfect location. “There is so much space around, you have the woodlands, the deer in the garden, ducks in the pond – it’s a fantastic house that really nestles into its surroundings. “You are close to the village and to Ayr, but it’s a very private house too. You are not overlooked.” Owlswood is a luxury contemporary home of around 6500 sq ft, set in woodland gardens complete with a large duck pond. It is located on Longhill Avenue, a sought-after residential area on the fringe of Alloway village where there are excellent local amenities and Ayr town centre, with its transport links, is around two miles away. Ayrshire is renowned for its championship golf courses and stunning coastline as well as many places of historical interest and Alloway’s links to Robert Burns are world-famous, of course.

The McCluskies carried out significant renovations on the property, professionally extending and remodelling it to create a bespoke family home.

A broad reception hall, with cloakroom/WC and walk-in storage, sets the scene with warm wooden tones. It leads to the impressive open plan kitchen and dining room, designed by JS Geddes, which has glazed doors to the rear gardens.

room, plus a purpose built games room, a superb home office and a super-sized guest bedroom with en suite shower room and dressing room on the ground floor too.

Upstairs, an L-shaped upper landing with storage cupboards provides access to four double bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities.

The master bedroom boasts wonderful views of the gardens via floor to ceiling glazed windows and it has a stunning en-suite bathroom and walk in dressing room too.

Two further double bedrooms have en-suite facilities while bedroom four is more of a minisuite, with its own bathroom, lounge area and private balcony.

The bedrooms are all spacious and bright, with lovely views.

Rona’s passion for renovating and styling properties is “just a hobby”, she smiles, but Owlswood is a great tribute to her considerable design skills.

The rooms are elegant yet welcoming, with personal touches and clever use of colour adding personality and warmth.

COOL SPACES: The open plan living area is a successful mix of style and comfort, with contemporary furnishings and fittings adding dramatic finishing touches.
