Jock Stein’s first home European match as Celtic manager saw the Hoops complete the job with a Joe McBride goal after being 6-0 up from the first leg. They were still booed off at full time though.
1971. European Cup. Quarter-final
Celtic 1 (Johnstone 28) Ajax 0
An emerging Ajax side featuring a young Johan Cruyff were 3-0 up from the first leg in Amsterdam and a Jimmy Johnstone goal wasn’t enough at Hampden. Ajax won the European Cup that year.

Johan Cryuff’s only game at Parkhead and he gave away a penalty for a foul on Tommy Burns. Marco van Basten was sub! Celtic won in Amsterdam in the return leg to stun Ajax.

Neil Lennon’s side looked certain to get into the Europa League thanks to goals from forgotten Mexican Efrain Juarez and Georgios Samaras, but somehow crashed to a 4-0 defeat in the return leg.
