Jock Stein’s first home Euro­pean match as Celtic man­ager saw the Hoops com­plete the job with a Joe McBride goal af­ter be­ing 6-0 up from the first leg. They were still booed off at full time though.

1971. Euro­pean Cup. Quar­ter-fi­nal

Celtic 1 (John­stone 28) Ajax 0

An emerg­ing Ajax side fea­tur­ing a young Jo­han Cruyff were 3-0 up from the first leg in Am­s­ter­dam and a Jimmy John­stone goal wasn’t enough at Ham­p­den. Ajax won the Euro­pean Cup that year.

Jo­han Cryuff’s only game at Park­head and he gave away a penalty for a foul on Tommy Burns. Marco van Bas­ten was sub! Celtic won in Am­s­ter­dam in the re­turn leg to stun Ajax.

Car­ry­ing a healthy 3-1 first leg lead to Glas­gow, Martin O’Neill’s men qual­i­fied for the Cham­pi­ons League group stages for the first time ever de­spite Zla­tan Ibrahi­movic play­ing for the Dutch side.

Neil Len­non’s side looked cer­tain to get into the Europa League thanks to goals from for­got­ten Mex­i­can Efrain Juarez and Ge­or­gios Sa­ma­ras, but some­how crashed to a 4-0 de­feat in the re­turn leg.

2013. Cham­pi­ons League. Group stage

Celtic 2 (For­rest 45 pen, Kayal 53) Ajax 1

Celtic sneak an im­por­tant win in a game marred by trou­ble from Ajax fans. Keeper Fraser Forster is im­mense as James For­rest and Beram Kayal net.
