IT HAS been a city for centuries, but only regained its status in 2002.

The news has delighted the bid’s organisers, including council leader Ian Miller, who said: “It’s interesting to know what others think of our prospects. We have a great plan to improve the cultural amenities in the city, including plans to renovate Perth Theatre and a scheme to regenerate the City Hall.”

The SNP councillor, however, said a plan to bring the Stone of Destiny back from Edinburgh Castle to place it at the heart of a new cultural development would be the “cream on the cake”.

Mr Miller added: “The overwhelming response to the bid of the people is our number one asset. It’s exciting times and I might have a wee flutter.”

William Hill has odds of 6/1 on rivals Paisley and 14/1 on Aberdeen. A decision is due before the summer.
