Hercules the bear pub shuts down

The Herald - - NEWS -

A PUB made famous by Hercules, the wrestling grizzly bear, has closed.

Thousands of people flocked to the Sheriffmuir Inn, near Dunblane, Perthshire, in the 1970s and 80s to see Hercules wrestle with its owner Andy Robin.

The 8ft, 70-stone bear, which was named the Scottish Tourist Board’s personality of the year, also appeared in movies, including James Bond film Octopussy, before he died in 2001.

Owners Geoff and Moira Cook said they were taking “a few days off” after Hogmanay, but have now announced they have ceased trading after 11 years in charge, due to their “financial position”.

In a statement, they said that “due to our current financial position we have ceased trading at the Sheriffmuir Inn. Geoff, Moira and family would like to thank all their very loyal customers.”
