“jostling” to get to him as he was led away.

Lavelle landed a blow and was fined £400 at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Celtic fans have backed Lavelle, with one setting up a Go Fund Me page to help pay his fine.

By last night, £265 had been pledged. Stuart McGregor, who set up the page, wrote: “Mr Lavelle is the gentleman who gave the Celtic pitch invader a clout round the ear for bringing bad press on our club.

“Mr Lavelle has been fined £400 by the courts, which I think is a little much. Considering everyone [in Celtic FC’s ground] would have done the same thing, please help pay his fine.”

While Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill banned Hatton from every football ground in Britain, she refused a Crown motion to also have Lavelle banned from football.

Ms Gill told Lavelle: “I can understand how you felt – the frustration of yourself and others in the stadium.

“You have been going to football matches for 48 years with no trouble.”
