MP’s anger at girl’s passport

The Herald - - FRONT PAGE -

WESTERN Isles MP Angus MacNeil has attacked the Home Office’s “callous” refusal to grant an island schoolgirl a passport as she is unable to provide her mother’s birth certificate.

In 2005, the girl’s mother left her in the care of her father and paternal grandparents. Ten years later, the girl’s father died and she is now cared for by her paternal grandparents who have parental rights.

But the 14-year-old’s passport application was refused because her mother’s birth certificate was not supplied.

Mr MacNeil said: “This is probably the most callous case I have worked on in my time as MP. A 14-year-old girl who simply wants a passport but the cruel actions of the Home Office prevent her .”
