Kirk plea on statelessness
THE Church of Scotland is backing an initiative calling on the UK Government to do more to support “stateless” people.
Right Rev Dr Derek Browning, Moderator of the General Assembly, has joined 110 religious and faith leaders in signing a statement urging more action to welcome those who have no country to call their home. It calls on the government to review ensure stateless people do not end up “locked in limbo”.
Research in 2016 showed more than 800 people in the UK were waiting for a decision on their status under a statelessness procedure introduced in 2013. Many of them had been in limbo or detention for more than two years.
